What it is

Intercom Fin is an AI customer service agent. It's built to resolve support queries end-to-end, across chat, email, and voice, autonomously handling a conversation from first contact through to resolution rather than just suggesting replies for a human agent to send. It integrates with Intercom itself as well as Salesforce, HubSpot, and Freshdesk, so it can sit inside an existing support and CRM stack rather than requiring a new one.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

Fin fits support teams that get a meaningful volume of repetitive queries, questions with fairly consistent answers, across multiple channels, and want those handled without a human touching every one. Because it works across chat, email, and voice and connects to Salesforce, HubSpot, and Freshdesk, it's aimed at teams that already run a real support operation with a CRM or helpdesk behind it, not someone handling support informally through a shared inbox.

It isn't the right fit for a team with low support volume, where the cost of AI-resolved outcomes wouldn't beat the cost of a human handling the occasional ticket, or for a team whose queries are mostly complex, judgment-heavy cases that need a human regardless of how good the AI is. Fin resolves queries autonomously, which is valuable at volume, but it also means outcomes that need real human discretion aren't what it's built to replace.

Pricing

Fin is priced per outcome, not per seat: $0.99 per resolved outcome. On another helpdesk, such as Zendesk or Salesforce, there's a $49 monthly minimum, which includes 50 resolved outcomes. On Intercom's own helpdesk there is no outcome minimum, but you pay for at least one Full seat. That structure means cost scales directly with how many queries actually get resolved rather than with how many agents or seats you have, which is a different pricing logic from most scheduling and automation tools priced by seat or by task.

Set it up

Official guide: Deploy Fin AI Agent over chat

  1. Go to intercom.com and click "Start free trial". Fin is available on trial and paid plans. Fin costs $0.99 per resolved outcome. On Intercom's own helpdesk, which these steps use, you also pay for at least 1 Full seat (Essential from $19/seat/mo billed annually, or $29 monthly), on top of Fin. These steps assume you can paste a short code snippet into every page of your site, or that your site runs on WordPress or Shopify. You now have an Intercom account.
  1. Open Settings > Channels > Messenger Live Chat > Overview and select "Install on website" on the Website card. Pick "Visitors & leads (quickest to install)", click "Continue", then choose "WordPress" or "Shopify" and follow the instructions. If your site uses neither, choose "Code snippet" and paste the code into every page of your site. The Messenger, the chat window your customers use, now appears on your site.
  1. Fin only answers from content you give it, and it needs at least 10 public articles in your Help Center before it can go live. Write 10 articles, each answering one question your customers ask, and publish each one. Your 10 articles are now public in your Help Center.
  1. Open "Fin AI Agent", "Train", "Content", and check that the articles you want Fin to use are enabled. Fin now answers only from the articles that are enabled there.
  1. Open "Fin AI Agent", then "Test". Add the questions your customers ask most, one by one, or upload a list as a CSV (a plain spreadsheet file). Read each answer and mark it "Good" or "Poor". Fix the articles behind each "Poor" answer, then test again. You now see each answer marked "Good" or "Poor".
  1. Open "Fin AI Agent", "Deploy", "Chat". In the "Simple deploy" panel, select "Web" as the channel and click "Save". Turn on "Let Fin introduce itself", write a short greeting, and click "Save". The preview on the right shows your chat window, so you see Fin the way a visitor sees it.
  1. Under "If Fin can't resolve the conversation", choose which teammate gets the conversation, and click "Save". Every visitor to your site can chat with Fin once you set it live, so check the preview first. Then click "Set Fin Live". Each question Fin resolves counts as one outcome at $0.99, and asking for a person is not counted. Fin now answers chat questions on your site.

When this works, Fin answers chat questions on your site from your own articles, and hands over to a person when it cannot resolve the question.

Strengths and limitations

The strength is that it's built for full resolution, not just support, across three channels, chat, email, and voice, so it isn't limited to text-based tickets the way many AI support tools are. Its integrations with major CRM and helpdesk platforms, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshdesk, alongside Intercom itself, mean it can plug into the systems a support team is likely already using to track cases.

The real limitation is the pricing model itself: paying per resolved outcome means costs grow directly with volume and aren't capped the way a flat per-seat subscription would be, so a sudden spike in query volume is a direct spike in cost, not just a strain on staff time. It's also worth noting the $49 minimum applies when Fin runs on another helpdesk, so evaluating the real cost means estimating outcome volume upfront rather than just picking a seat count. For a team with unpredictable or highly complex query volume, that pricing structure needs real modeling before committing, it isn't a flat, easy-to-budget cost like a monthly subscription. Worth weighing directly against what a human support hire or a per-seat helpdesk tool would cost at your actual query volume before assuming the per-outcome model is cheaper.
