Make your own brand visuals without a designer
Every social graphic, quote sheet and slide deck needs a designer you cannot justify, so it either waits or gets made badly in whatever tool is open.
Tools worth considering
Figma
Browser-based design tool for interfaces and brand assets, with real-time collaboration and separate seat types for full, developer and collaborator access.
Starter free with unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates and 150 AI credits/day up to 500/mo; Professional $16/mo per full seat with 3,000 AI credits, $12 per dev seat and $3 per collab seat; Organization billed annually at $55 per full seat, $25 dev, $5 collab; Enterprise billed annually at $90 per full seat, $35 dev, $5 collab
The problem
A small business produces more visual material than it expects. Social posts, a price list, a one-page proposal, slides for a pitch, a sign for the window. Individually none of them justifies hiring a designer. Together they add up to a constant trickle of small jobs.
What usually happens is that each one gets made in whatever tool was nearest, by whoever had time. The result is that nothing looks related to anything else. Different fonts, slightly different colours, a logo at three sizes and two levels of quality. Customers do not consciously notice inconsistency, they just form a vaguer impression of the business than you intended.
The other failure is dependency. When the only person who can change a graphic is an external designer, small updates wait for an invoice, and a price change takes a week.
What AI can actually do here
Less than the marketing suggests, and the honest answer is that the leverage here is structure rather than generation.
The change that matters is having components and styles defined once: your colours, your typefaces, your logo placement, saved as things you reuse rather than recreate. After that, making the fifteenth social graphic is filling in a layout instead of designing from scratch, and changing your brand colour is one edit rather than forty.
Real-time collaboration matters more than it sounds for a small team, because the alternative is a chain of exported images sent back and forth with comments in a message thread.
The AI credits in these tools help with first drafts and repetitive production work. They will not give you a coherent visual identity, and a business that generates every asset independently ends up exactly where it started, with a pile of unrelated images made faster.
How the tools differ
Figma is the tool here, and the thing to understand is its seat model rather than a feature list, because that is what decides the cost.
Starter is free with unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates, and 150 AI credits per day up to 500 per month. For one person making occasional assets that is often the whole answer.
Professional is $16 per month per full seat with 3,000 AI credits, plus $12 per dev seat and $3 per collab seat. That last one is the useful detail for a small business: people who need to view and comment rather than design cost $3 rather than a full licence. Organization is billed annually at $55 per full seat, $25 dev and $5 collab, and Enterprise at $90, $35 and $5.
So the practical shape is one full seat for whoever makes things and collab seats for everyone who approves them, rather than a full licence per person.
When you don't need a tool
If you make four graphics a year, buy a template and edit it. Learning a design tool for occasional use is a hobby cost, not a business one.
If your visual output is only social posts, the scheduling tools have built-in editors that are adequate and already paid for. See plan Instagram and TikTok visually before you post.
And if what you actually need is a proper identity, a logo and a system that holds together, hire someone once to build it and use a tool to apply it afterwards. Software is good at applying a design decision consistently and bad at making the decision.

Frequently asked questions
Can I learn this without a design background?
For laying out assets from a template and keeping them consistent, yes, in an afternoon or two. Making something look genuinely good from nothing is a skill and the tool does not supply it. Aim at consistent and clear rather than at impressive.
What is a collab seat?
A cheaper seat for people who need to view, comment and fill in existing designs rather than build them. At $3 per month on Professional it changes the arithmetic for a small team, because you no longer need a full licence for the person who only approves things.
Is the free plan enough?
For one person producing occasional assets, usually. Starter includes unlimited drafts, templates and 150 AI credits per day up to 500 per month. The reasons to upgrade are working with others on the same files and needing more AI credits, not access to the basic tools.
Should I use AI to generate images for my brand?
For internal drafts and layout placeholders it is fine. For anything customer-facing, check the licensing terms of whatever produced it and be careful about generated imagery that implies things about your business that are not true, such as premises or staff you do not have.
