What it is

Hootsuite is a social media management platform rather than a scheduler. Scheduling is in there, but so is a message inbox that collects comments and direct messages across accounts, brand monitoring for tracking what is said about you, and reporting built for showing results to someone else. Its AI teammate, Wisdom, drafts posts, recommends actions and analyses performance.

The shape of the product tells you the intended user. Standard covers up to 10 social accounts, Professional and Advanced allow unlimited accounts, and the pricing assumes social media is somebody's job rather than a task at the end of a busy day.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

It fits organizations where social media is a function: a marketing team, an agency managing client accounts, or a business where inbound comments and messages are a real support channel that needs one inbox. If replies are currently scattered across native apps and something gets missed every week, that inbox is the argument.

It is a poor fit for a solo business posting to three channels. At $99 per month for the entry plan, Hootsuite costs more in a month than a year of a simple scheduler, and most of what you are paying for is monitoring and reporting you would not open. Buffer is the honest recommendation at that size.

Pricing

Hootsuite is paid, with no free plan. There is a 14-day trial that does not require a credit card and does not charge you automatically when it ends. Paid plans start at $99 per month for Standard, which covers up to 10 social accounts, $199 per month for Professional, and up to $399 per month for Advanced, both with unlimited accounts. Enterprise is quoted on request.

Treat the entry price as the real floor. Unlike per-channel tools, there is no small version of Hootsuite, so the decision is whether the monitoring, inbox and reporting justify a three-figure monthly line.

Set it up

Official guide: Get started with Hootsuite

  1. Sign up for the 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. You can sign up with your email address or with a Google, Facebook, LinkedIn or X account. After the trial, Standard costs $99/mo for up to 10 social accounts. Collect the login details of the social accounts you want to connect before you start. Your trial is now running.
  2. The first time you sign in, Hootsuite asks you to connect your social accounts. You can also go to "Account", select "Social accounts and teams", select "More", then "Connect social accounts" and choose the network. Connect the accounts you post to most. You now see them listed as connected accounts.
  3. Select "Create", then "Create from scratch". Select the social accounts to publish to and write your post. Add an image or video if you have one. You now see a preview of how the post looks on the right.
  4. When the post is ready, select "Schedule for later" and pick a date and time. Hootsuite publishes it on your real social accounts at that moment, so schedule a post you are happy to show your followers. Your post is now scheduled.
  5. Go to "Plan" to see your scheduled posts in a calendar view. You now see your post on the day and at the time you picked.
  6. Go to "Analytics" and select "Create a report". Choose the report you would send to a manager or client. Your own posts have no results yet, so select "Demo reports" first if you want to see what a finished report looks like. You now see a report on your screen.

When this works, you have your accounts, a scheduled post on a calendar and a report in one place, and enough evidence to decide whether the plan price is worth it for you.

On Advanced (up to $399/mo): unlimited social accounts.

Strengths and limitations

The strength is consolidation for teams. One inbox across networks, monitoring, approvals and reporting in a single place is a genuine operational gain when several people share responsibility and nothing may be missed.

The limitations are price and fit. There is no free plan and no small plan, so the tool excludes exactly the users who would find a scheduler useful. Feature depth per network varies, as it does for every platform in this category, because the networks control what third parties can do. And a platform this broad needs someone to own it: the inbox and monitoring only pay off if a person checks them daily. See Buffer vs Hootsuite.
