What it is

Later schedules social content with a visual planner at its centre: you see the grid before you post it, which matters for accounts where the feed is a designed surface rather than a stream. Plans are sold as social sets, where one set is 8 profiles, so a brand with an account on each network counts as one set rather than eight channels.

Its AI layer works on credits: Caption Writer generates on-brand captions and Ideas produces content suggestions, each consuming one credit, with 5 per month on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

It fits visual-first brands and the people managing them: retail, hospitality, creators, anyone whose Instagram or Pinterest presence is a shop window. The social set model also suits agencies with a handful of clients, since each client is a set rather than a pile of individually priced channels.

It is a weaker fit for someone posting to two channels who wants the cheapest possible scheduler, where Buffer starts free and charges $5 per month per channel. It is also not a listening or reporting platform in the way Hootsuite is.

Pricing

Later is paid with no free plan and a 14-day free trial. Starter is $25 per month with 1 social set of 8 profiles, 1 user and 5 AI credits. Growth is $50 per month with 2 social sets, 2 users and 50 credits. Scale is $110 per month with 6 social sets, 4 users and 100 credits. Annual billing takes 25% off, at $18.75, $37.50 and $82.50 per month respectively, billed as $225, $450 and $990 per year.

Compare on the unit, not the number. A social set of 8 profiles at $25 is cheap for a brand present everywhere and expensive for someone active on two networks.

Official guide: Getting Started With Later Social

  1. Start the 14-day free trial at later.com. Later has no free plan, so pick the Starter plan, which costs $25/mo after the trial and includes 1 social set. A social set is a group of your profiles, with one profile per platform. For Instagram, have a business or creator profile and its login ready. Your trial of the Starter plan is now running.
  2. Open Later on your computer at app.later.com and go to "Calendar". Click the + icon beside an empty profile slot above the Calendar, choose the platform, and log in to authorize Later. Use the exact username and password of the profile you want to add. Later can now post for you. "Enabled" appears next to the profile.
  3. Click "Media", then "Manage Your Media", and upload a few photos or videos from your device. You now see them in your Media Library, which is where Later keeps everything you upload.
  4. Set your weekly posting times. In "Calendar", select your profile and double-click any time slot to open the Quick Schedule wizard, which saves a weekly rhythm of slots. Click "Get Started", pick the days and times for your slots, then click "Next" and "Finish". Your slots now show in grey on the Calendar.
  5. Click "Preview" at the top of the Calendar to open the Visual Instagram Planner, a grid that shows how your feed will look. In the side library, tick the media you want, click "Add to Preview", drag items into the order you like, and click "Save Changes". You now see your next posts laid out as a grid.
  6. Go back to the Calendar and open each post to write its caption. Quick Scheduled Instagram and TikTok posts start as notification posts, which means Later sends you a reminder and does not publish for you. Switch a post to Auto Publish only when you are sure of it, because Later then publishes it on your public profile at the scheduled time. Each post you open now has its own caption.

When this works, your next posts sit in your weekly slots with captions, and you have seen how the grid looks before anything goes live.

Strengths and limitations

The strength is visual planning. For accounts where the grid matters, seeing the layout before publishing is a real advantage that stream-based schedulers do not offer, and the social set model is fair for multi-network brands.

The limitations are the absence of a free plan, the user caps and the AI credit allowance. One user on Starter means a second person needs the $50 tier, and 5 AI credits a month is closer to a sample than a feature. At the low end, the honest comparison is Buffer vs Hootsuite plus this: if you post to two channels and do not care about the grid, cheaper options do the job.
